Glenaros Estate

The Glenaros Estate's Atlantic Hazel woodlands are globally significant due to their wide variety of lichens, bryophytes, and fungi. Within the Atlantic Hazel woodland, there are several exceptionally rare lichen species that depend on ancient woodland habitats for their existence. These lichens not only have an important ecological function but also provide food, shelter, and nesting material for various wildlife species. Within our Glenaros Alantic Hazelwood, 125 lichen species, including 66 notable species have been recorded, 52 of these are categorised as species for which Britain has International Responsibility. Appropriate management of the Hazel is vital to secure these populations.

Glenaros is home to a luxury shepherd's hut, which serves as our flagship ecotourism site. Tucked away amidst ancient beech trees, this beautifully crafted hut offers a rustic yet luxurious experience. We take great pride in inviting visitors to Glenaros, where they can immerse themselves in our awe-inspiring surroundings and learn about our various projects. With the sea just a stone's throw away and the stunning backdrop of rolling hills and our estate house, it truly is a tranquil haven.

Highland cows have roamed the Glenaros Estate for hundreds of years, their presence has a significant impact on the ecosystem. Thier grazing and dung helps to cycle important nutrients back into the soil microbiology, playing a crucial role in promoting a diverse range of plant species. This, in turn, leads to a more complex vegetation structure. The unique qualities of the Highland cow make them an ideal choice for conservation grazing, as their movements also benefit smaller wildlife by creating pathways, open areas, and disturbed water margins. By keeping highland cows at the Glenaros Estate, we not only preserve our connection to the land and heritage but also contribute to nature restoration and natural carbon removal through our agroforestry approach.

Glenaros provides a backdrop for education for the local community, including volunteer tree planting days and citizen science wildlife monitoring. Our Ecologist, Lindsay Mackinlay, took the Mull Wildlife Group around our Atlantic rainforests at Glenaros. It was a great opportunity to see some great wildlife, including nesting Grey heron and rare lichens, including the extraordinarily named Frilly fruited jelly-skin lichen. The Mull and Iona Ranger Service now have a small group of trained volunteers on the Isle of Mull who undertake online training sessions, followed by spending time on the banks of the Aros to put into practice their sampling and monitoring skills. Our aim is to positively add to the local and wider community of Mull, opening our doors to create an inclusive safe and welcoming environment for all to enjoy. We occasionally host events on the estate and where possible we support local trades and businesses and help to boost the economy. We continue to support the Salen Annual Agricultural Show and offer the showground facilities to help to continue its annual success.
